It's because of the name! atheist sounds bad to some people, like they are wrong for not believing in God or whatever. The next time someone asks you, and assume that you "hate" religion, just say that you weren't brought up on any specific religion, but you still respect others.

And, of course, you are in a position to speak for the majority of atheists in the world, and know how the majority of people feel about atheism? Well you may be right on the last point.
The word "atheist" means the rejection of theism, or religion. Rejection suggests hate, or being against.
Typically, atheists, by this definition, do not believe in God; more specifically that One associated with the Judeo-Christian "bias".
Since the work has roots in Greek, it is not a modern-day religious bias being expressed. How otherwise would you want to classify your belief system ( or lack thereof)? Those with whom I have had contact seem to deride and make fun of Christians, calling us idiots. So who's wearing which shoe?
You choose a road that is bumpy and fraught with ruts. You must bounce along and take the punishment.

Well' Christians take an offence to that. Christianity is only titled as a religion because it has a God and then explains the rest. But all other religions are made up because their people titles great emperors or philosophers as Gods and then they make it into a religion by continual worship of that person. Is there any other so-called religion that has an empty tomb and a risen Christ that actually was here on Earth? Also, is there any other religion that speaks nothing of but the love and forgiveness for mankind? Or doesnt have any rituals that you have to do daily other than preach the word of Christ to mankind? I am a Christian and I spread the word of God to people and only give them a choice. I dont do the "You're going to Hell!!!" thing to them either because all sin is equal and I, myself am guilty of it all.

Why do you assume that everyone assumes you hate religion? Why do all atheists think that all non-atheists assume they are anti-religion?
First, let's get rid of the "everyone," whom I take it to mean, "everyone that is not us." Then, it becomes a clear example of you feeling persecuted for not believing and wanting to show that you are just as good, if not better than the non-atheists. (i.e., they are biased, you are not).
So, what happened to you recently to make you assume your non-belief and your people's reputation has suffered a biased blow? I think there is a more interesting part to the question..........

I don't think atheists hate religion I just think they don't know what it is. The thing I don't get is what benefit do Atheists get out of not believing in God. Even if I was in front of a firing line and my death was iminent it gives me a calm and peace thinking about being in Heaven. Maybe those thoughts are just chemical reactions and being in a stressful situation as Atheists would want to believe.
For me I would like to believe that Heaven is 1000 times better than your very best experince on Earth. Than just thinking I am plant food now.

Because belief in religons requires an certain amount of faith or insanity. To belive in god requires both mental and emotinal conections. People do not just belive in God, they live the lifestyle, going to mass, praying, having sacrfces for ones own religion.
Now when you look at atheism there is a less commiment involved. You guys believe because you think, logically god cannot exist (this is a genralisation) It requires no commiment not sacrfice, and does not require the individual to put himself outthere, for faliure. It is the opposite of religious belief, atheism is founded on a deep cold thinking logical basis.
Thus when looking at religon, something at requires irattional thought the obivous reaction would be to highlight the flaws in beliving in god. You atheists can see the flaws in religious worship, thus we asume you would tend to hate it.

You are not the first one neither you will be the last one. Just as believers are there so are atheists also are there. if all become believers the creation will come to stop so your presence is very essential for the stability of creation. I am a believer but I do not hate atheists. I just pity them because they are like men who have eyes yet would not use them. So they are also like other blind people.just as a believer cannot prove that God is there so also an atheist cannot prove that God is not there.(he has an additional difficulty of convincing his own mind that what he thinks is right). That is why it is said in sankya yoga "Ishwar asiddhey"(meaning god cannot be proved either way.

Better to be one than having a blind belief.
If there is something worth experiencing, as the religions claim, it the atheists who stand a better chance, for the simple reason that they do not seek a false sense of security in blind belief !
Only precaution to be maintained is that open-minded attitude is to be maintained throughout, and the sense of self-awareness is always at the sharpest, razor like alert !

You have to ask each and every person if they assume that atheists hate religion. Don't worry about what other people think. You have chosen not to worship a god but to worship the absence of a god. If people can't handle that then don't talk to them.

It has nothing to do with "religion" but with whether or not you can understand the concept of spirit. If you are only listening to your mind and not to the needs and desires of your soul, then you are not going to be able to find personal fulfillment.
There is a purpose. You should not live for your needs and wants, which would be the logical and rational thing to do, because you will feel unsatisfied and that you are missing the purpose. You have to live for your soul, live for God. That is the simple and irrational answer.
