Sure, trim off the flowers as the spent blooms tend to take energy from the plant. Be sure to water well. Most mums die because folks stop watering when they stop blooming. plant in good garden soil in sun to partial sun. When they return in the spring, pinch them back till they grow to form a nice soft mound. Mums are not very picky- they are grown in very sandy fields in the mid-east coast. They need good drainage and bloom in mid to late summer. Most greenhouse mums are stimulated by a plant hormone to flower profusely all at once. Your mums will never match that performance, but will perform very well with good care.

Dude, Your right on the alcohol and nicotine part, I wish that was illegal too. When I was a kid I smoked pot, and it does affect you , but no worse than alcohol, but anything that affects your responsiveness (alcohol, Drugs) needs to be illegal because while your under the influence of that you can hurt other people. (I was a Cop for a long time and saw some pretty bad accidents caused by people who only had smoked a little weed). And smoking needs to go for the same reason, it hurts other people. check out all the second-hand smoke stuff. But for now the money of the alcohol and tobacco companies overrides common sense and they remain legal. For some reason someone long ago decided pot was bad (it is) and it didn't have the popular demand that booze and cig's did do it made it on the unlawful list.

Hi,
I know that I sure would.
They will come back next spring.
You need to "pinch" back new growth during the late spring/early summer to aid in making the plants fill out and become more bushy.
Pinching back the flower buds that appear during early summer is not what you want.
Buds that appear about early Sept., let them develop, that will give you a large fresh "blast" of pretty flowers that are nice and dense on the mum.
Hope this helps, Dave

I'd give it a try. I'm zone 3 or 4, and they come up the next year fine. Maybe you need more fertilizer? If you are trying to do it organically, you may need a different kind of mum.

In New England when you plant a four inch pot of mums from this year it comes up as the equivalent of a gallon pot the next year. Try it you have nothing to lose.

Heed David S.'s answer. It works and is well worth the effort. Beautiful flowers year after year, that is if the deer don't eat them first!
