All of a sudden the dryer made a loud sound and shut off. Well, I have a shelf above the dryer with chemicals, apparently the toilet bowl cleaner leaked down the back wall and a little got into the socket where the dryer pugs in. I unplugged it and wiped it off, even put a hairdryer by socket to dry it out, still feels a bit greasy. Plugged back in and flipped breaker in basement. Made the noise again, dryer does not work. Anything else to try? Two kids, need to do laundry.

you should have some one change your outlet before using it again right away.1 thing a person shouldnt mess with 220 volts unless they know just exactly what they are doing, it can cause a fire or even a death and you have 2 kids to think about and raise.

First thing to think about is where are you going to put the shelf. Sounds like you need to move it, while doing all the other work in that area.

Listen to the dryer, can you hear the motor running. If so and the dryer is not tumbling, you have broken a belt and the motor maybe bouncing back and forth.

You need to replace the plug in as soon as possible. You can pick up one at a local hardware store. Make sure you know the plug configuration, there are many. Always shut off power to the dryer plug, if your not sure which one that is turn off all the power for safety reasons.

This is only a start to find the problem, if none of this works contact your local area electrician or maintenance people in your area for further directions. All qualified people will have an opinion, free of charge.

Does the ckt breaker pop when you hear the noise? Is it coming from the dryer or the outlet? If it is from the outlet then you probably still have chemicals in it and it is shorting out or the outlet itself is blown. Whether it is the dryer or outlet you need to replace the outlet anyway because of the chemicals you spilled in it. They are not hard to install. Just make sure you have the ckt breakers turned OFF and then remove the old outlet and check the wires. If they are burned badly you will probably have to have new wires pulled and will need a handyman who knows electricity or an electrician. If the wires are OK then just buy another outlet like the one you pulled and install it. Then turn on the power and if you still have the noise then it is the dryer and a repairman is needed.

That's the best advice I can give you without knowing all the facts.

From your description of noise i don't think the problem is the wall socket. I can't see where alittle moisture would hurt that even toilet bowl cleaner. Only thing it could do is short the ground to one of the power lines, but that would just flip the breaker not have anything to do with the dryer. You COULD flip the breaker or i guess it flipped itself- take the cover off- center screw- spray the whole thing with wd-40 or any other electrical cleaner, wait for it to dry, and try again. But i'm willing to bet the problem is in the dryer, maybe caused by the leaking outlet. in any case you would want the outlet cleaned anyhow.

You said after you cleaned and dryed it, you flipped the breaker you never indicated you flipped the breaker before you started the cleaning. If this is correct, you may have a problem in the plug or wiring. If you have a multi meter or know how to check the wiring for current and continuity, do that on both the plug and the dryer cord. If not, call someone who knows how to do it without killing themselves. That may be an electrician or a fix it man.

Yes. You don't want to have the dryer heat the chemicals and burn the house down or worse blown up the house. Also make sure the dryer is unplugged from the wall outlet.

Hi iswd1,
No you don't necessarily need a electrician.
Go to Home depot-get a new plug & you might as well get a 3-way ground plug.Tools-screw driver, cutters tool to remove some of wire, new 3-way ground plug, attach wires to the screws., put the cover on your good to go! If you don't know how to do the guys can explain it to you. Be sure to turn off electricity before you install new plug!
I installed one for my Mom's washer & dryer remember to use the ground wire. ( I am female) & my older brothers helped over the phone & yes i got em to work again! Have a good day.

The wires on the breaker has to be removed to isolate by the proccess of elimination, to detirmine if the breaker itself is bad. If it stays on when reset, then change the receptacle, and check out the dryer for overload, shorts, etc. the new receptacle is about 50 bucks, sometimes you can buy a used dryer for less than that.

Find Laundromat.
Could be a blown outlet ( electrician required),
or a blown timer in the dryer ( repairman required)
neither comes cheap!

Don't mess with 220V plugs, I can tell you that much. You can cause an electrical fire or get seriously hurt. Just leave it alone and get someone there asap to replace the plug. If its not an emergency call, it shouldn't cost you that much.
