Republicans don't give President Clinton credit for the stock market increases in the late 1990s. Should President Bush get credit for the Dow record? I know he decreased taxes for capital gains and dividends and that maybe a stimulus.

Bush's claim of tax cuts helping the economy is not supported by most economists. This is a hold over of supply side economics of the Reagan administration in which we really can't say supply side was tried because of the excessive government spending.

Most economists agree with one and only one concept from the supply siders. That is, a marginal tax rate of over 40% is a disincentive to investment. A situation that was not faced by either Bush.

The idea that tax cuts have improved our economy during the last 6 years is politics. Not economics.

By the way, 12,000 on the Dow is only 300 points over the 2000 high. The current record marks a 2.5% uptick over 6 1/2. That's with no adjustment for inflation. I'd say it is a valid indicator of the value of his fiscal policy.
