There's really no limit - for instance I've framed little 5X7" pieces with as much as 8" mat - it really depends on the subject. A big mat can give a painting a lot of impact. It also adds considerably more to the price of framing, but adds equally to the "perceived value" of an image by giving it more presence.

What is the question? How big should the frame be? How far from the ceiling should the picture be? How much room between the frame and the art?
