Depends on what type of road trip you're thinking of. For me I can either have a destination in mind or just driving where the wind blows. But here is my standard :-
1. Credit Card
2. Atm Card
3. Small Change for toll
4. AAM (Auto mobile towing service)
5. A bottle for Petrol
6. Flashlights
7. Maps
8. Compass
9. Cellphone
10. Change of clothes
11. Water for you and the car
12. A cooler box (ice box)
13. Some food and snacks, replenish every chance you get
14. Blankets for cold nights in the trailer parks.
15. A companion
16. Camera/Video Camera
17. Umbrella/Winter clothing
18. Toilet paper
19. Ipod or Mp3 Player ( a adapter to charge the batteries )
20. A laptop with GPS and Wifi to keep in touch.
Its not a complete list but I think that should be a good start.

Bottles of water, a source of music like an iPod or mp3 player and a good amount of things to do and eat on the ride. Water bottles are usable for hydrating yourself, and when you're done with them, they can be used to urinate inside so you don't have to stop!
Things to do because the ride might get boring.

if you travel by car, make sure you have enough gas, emergency gadgets for your car, mobile phone for emergency, some food for snacks and drinks. it depends on how long you will travel for you to need clothes and personal things that u usually use daily. same things to bring if you will commute except the gas & car gadgets
