Mind your own business and let the snake mind its own business. To a snake, you are a potential predator. It wants to get away from you if at all possible so that you don't eat it. As it slithers away, admire it for the fascinating creature that it is.
Remember, also, that very few snakes in North America are venomous, and the ones that are are fairly wimpy as venomous snakes go. More people in the US die from being struck by lightning than from snake bites, and the few who get bitten are generally either drunk at the time and being very stupid, or people who are dealing with the snake in captivity (anything from zookeepers to hobbyists) who get careless or unlucky.

Around here it is going to be either (1) a gopher snake, (2) a rattlesnake, (3) a garter snake, or (4) a california king snake.
Since the last two are really easy to identify, I usually go right over and pick it up and hold it for a bit, then let it go. If it is not one of thew later two, I get a good close look at it first to make sure it is not a rattler, then if not I pick it up and look it over for a while then put it back down and let it go on its way.
In any case, if there are kids around I use it as a chance to teach them a bit about snakes and how cool they are and how they fit into the local ecology.

First I'd try to figure out what slidering is....then I'd just watch it roll on past...snakes don't attack people without reason...well, unless they're very large and very hungry, then it'd be a good idea to move.

Say "oh, cool" and go as close as i think is safe, maybe double check with someone to see if it's dangerous. i love snakes too. i can't see why mice, snakes and spiders freak so many people out. they're all really cool animals, and important!!

I just wrote this in another question. A sidewinder once put a scratch across the toe of my boot. It struck first and then started rattling. I think that I set a new record for the high jump. Any other snake, I just leave alone.
Sidewinders are nasty! They have no sense of humor at all.
This one chased me until I shot it.

You should stay calm and stay where you are. The snake will not be attracted to you anymore. If you want to try to escape, take small and slow steps. Don't run cause it will only pounce and bite you and most likely you'll die unless it's not a poisonous one.

Look at its markings etc so I can be able to identify it when I get home. If it is on the road I try to chase it off so it doesnt get hit.
