I can't believe how much theivery and fraud exists behind the scenes at thrift stores. Such activities: Employees scamming donations, managers employing illegal immigrants, employees stealing to sell on eBay, etc., I'm surprised that more isn't done by the authorities. My lady worked at one of these and was threatened with dismissal and humiliation when she complained to the manager about her co-workers dishonesty. Two days later two of her tires were slashed. She had to resign as her parents feared for her safety. Sadly she took this job as she had a social conscience and wanted to help people while gaining experience.

Why are things so bad at these stores. Do you have any examples of thrift corruption? ...(and shame on you if you are involved in a thrift scam...it's like stealing aid for the poor!)

I'm sure it goes on
I'm also absolutely sure it's not limited to thrift stores...there is corruption all around us at every level of retail.
and everywhere else for that matter.
it's a fallen world
stay strong in your conviction to support charities, there are some good ones out there.

Are you saying those who do not do those things, but work in a thrift store, should be ashamed? What if they want to affect a change...and have a social conscience, want to help people, gain the experience...and cannot get hired at a suitable job with anyone else in their town or area?

This is a huge, big business. It really, really is. I believe National Geographic did a feature on the Thrift Store business years ago. I do know for a fact that there are some honest ones, though, supporting Good causes like Hospice and Catholic Charities and Disaster Relief. God bless your lady! I hope she keeps looking for the honest groups. Or, she could go into the business!

It's disgusting! I donated 20 extra dollars on my electric bill for people who needed help with their payments for 6 years. I had a friend who went through a horrid divorce and she needed help turning her lights back on. I let her know about the assistance that my electric company offered so she called and they told her that they couldnt help her. It's sick. I stopped donating after that because if any family was needy, hers was. As for the thrift stores, they are supposed to be for the needy. People give that stuff to the store for free, then the store turns around and sells it for outrageous prices.

I found out about the stealing around 1999, that's when I stopped donating to the salvation army....60 minutes or some show like that exposed a family of sisters who were all managers, they stole the best of the items and opened boutiques.....they got caught because they were taking limos to the shopping centers for shopping excursions.....

My girlfriend drug me into one about two years ago and there were these wall ornaments behind the counter (beautiful) we were told they were not for sell.....we called over the manager and she reiterated they were not for sell.....I chimed in.....I guess those are for you, she looked at me like I knew her dirty little secrete.....LOL

Never complain to management, always complain to Corporate Headquarters.
