I live in Europe and I've been to France countless times.
This friend was teasing you. This is absolutely not true.

I've lived in 2 european countries & traveled to many others at all times of the year & this is not a practice I have ever run across. I think he's just messin' with ya.

I have lived in 3 countries in europe, and I have never heard of this once before, so I assume he is pulling your leg.
While they do have some strange, and some wonderful traditions, nothing like that.
