4 months is the average age when babies start teething, but it's a long process.. that first tooth comes in at approx. 6 months.
And YES, chewing fists (and other things) is a definite teething symptom. So is drooling, unusual crankiness, mild fever, and swollen gums.

YES YES. He also probably thinks his fists are something new to chew on and likes the sensation of it on his fist. BUT... if he's being a big drool bucket and cranky along with that, then he more than likely is teething. My daughter will be 3 months old next week and I just found her first tooth.
But he also might be going through the process of teething, which is when the teeth shift through and get ready to emerge. That process can really irritate a baby because there is nothing he can do to ease the pain from it, so he will chew and gnaw on everything he can.

My son is 4 1/2 months old and has been chewing on his fists for a month and a half! No teeth yet. He sometimes has days where he acts like they really bother him but no teeth. I've heard that this can go on for months before a tooth pops up. Oh and my son is drooling like it's going out of style too! He soaks so many bibs during one day!! My hubby says we wouldn't thirst to death on a desert island as long as he's around!

That is usually one of the first signs, chewing on everything and drooling like crazy, my son started teething at 3 months and got his first tooth at months. They can teeth anywhere from 2-3 months before a first tooth appears. Good Luck

Depends is he just chewing his fists for if thats the case then he's discovered his fists and with baby's all goes into the mouth--how they discover and the chewing is, along with tasting,a domfort thing. But if with the chewing he is also cranky and cries(but fed and dry and no other reason for it) then more than likely may just be starting---Call your Pediatrician(my nephew's baby is teething and wife rec'd from the Pediatrician liquid medication that they rub on his gums-numbs them a bit, they also use the chew toy that they put into the fridge and get it cold-also helps.

That is indeed possible--my son got his first tooth at 4 months, though many children don't start until 6 months.

Very possible, or at the very least they are developing, if he fussy wet a washcloth and put it int the fridge to get cold and let him chew on that it will feel good on his little mouth.
