There's a free program available for download off the net called Irfanview that resizes images very well. The website is www.irfanview.com . With that program, just open the picture file, go to Image > Resize/Resample, and type in the dimensions you want. If you don't want it stretched, make sure the "preserve aspect ratio" box is checked. No sweat involved. Just make the image bigger so it fits nicely on your desktop. If you keep resizing the same image over and over, it starts to get blurry though, so you should reopen the original file and resize that if you didn't get the size right the first time.

I can give two options, either create the image file larger or the same size as your screen's resolution, or the easier, if you are using Windows you can set it to center the image rather than stretch it to fit the screen when you are choosing the background in the control panel.

A couple of ways, you could edit and arrange your photos on a web page (free ones out there) and then set the web page as your default so it comes up every time. I don't think you can add a lot of photos to your desktop and control size and shape past center, stretch, and tile commands.

Right click on your desktop (in Windows XP), select the "Settings" tab, look and see what "Screen resolution" is selected. Note this then make a picture or resize one to fit these dimensions.
