The Heights is a really pretty area with beautiful old bungalow homes with real character, but not the safest place to live. The newer neighborhoods like Katy or Kingwood or The Woodlands are safer but the homes are identical and flavorless, if newer.
West University is nice too, with some beautiful homes, but expensive and not very safe. If you are working in Houston, I personally would live in a nice condo/loft in downtown or somewhere around River Oaks, I think, depending on what you can afford. Either that, or one of the cute bungalows in the Heights.
If you can work at home or in the suburbs, I'd go for The Woodlands, which has finally gotten some great shopping and restaurants and has the Pavilion, which is great for concerts. But it's a horrible drive from there to downtown, and that drive every day would be stressful as hell.
So it does depend, to some extent, what your situation is and what you can afford. There are some cute apartments and homes in the Montrose area too but not very safe.

Pearland, Texas is becoming a very popular and fast growing suburb just south of and a 20-30 min. drive into Houston. Two malls are being built, there are great restaurants and more scheduled to come. Doctors from the medical center are opening offices all around Pearland and hospitals are in the works. Being close to the toll road you can get to any side of Houston and all the way out to Katy in less than 45 minutes, and to the beach in an hour.

I would love a Downtown condo or someplace on the NW side but the traffic is so bad over there. I like the neighborhood that's on 1960 past Kuykendahl (there's a golf course there somewhere, don't know the name). They have nice condos back there
