Some dogs and cats do a pretty good impression of smiling, depending on how their mouths are set.

The dog my family had for 14 years, and her official name was Amazon Grace, but my grandpa called her "Gritch" which was short for grinning *****, because when she had done something wrong like stealing food off the counter, when you came home she'd tip her nose down and look at you out of the corner of her eyes, and she'd grin - the corners of her mouth would go back and up, just like with people. It was really funny and cute.

Yep, my dogs. Especially when they were teasing me with their toys by playing keep away! Or, when I give them a Frosty Paws. :) My husband would tell our german shepherd Shadow "go goose, mom!" And Shadow would come up behind me and nip my butt, then dance back kind of sideways, laughing his doggie laugh while my husband about choked he was laughing so hard. :) Dogs definitely smile AND laugh.
