It's kind of like a VCR but better. It's actually a brand of DVR.

It uses magnetic media (a disk, like a computer hard drive) to record shows, and it knows the tv schedule because it dials up to download the schedule about once a day or so. You can just tell it which shows you like and it will automatically figure out when they are on and record them for you, so you don't have to bother knowing when they will be on or if the time it airs changes. TiVo just figures it all out for you.

A Tivo is a brand name DVR.
DVR = Digital Video Recorder.

With the subscription, you get channel guide,
season pass, wishlists, search for programs,
and the ability to pause/rewind live video.

Recorded video is recording onto a hard disk
built into the DVR, instead of onto a tape
like a VCR.

THE BEST INVENTION KNOWN TO MAN. LOL OK SO MAYBE A LITTLE EXTREME. BUT I ABSOULUTELY LOVE MY TIVO. I DON'T KNOW HOW I EVER LIVED WITHOUT IT. I HAVE SOME MUCH FREEDOM FROM THE TIME MY SHOWS COME ON.
