As an attorney, I can tell you with some certainty that mailboxes, even ones you buy from the store, are the property of the United States Post Office.
I can also tell you, that I have never, in all my days, heard of anyone being arrested for leaving an appropriate object in the mailbox. When you hear people being arrested for putting things in mailboxes, , those things are usually bombs, dead animals, threatening letters, etc.
If you are really concerned, the safest thing to do is to find another inconspicuous spot. Inside/under her door maybe? She owns that.

Hmmm....there are arguments either way and the tendency is to say NO. It is expressly against statutory law in all jurisdictions of the United States. I would not take that chance. A person can not give you permission to break the law.....their consent means nothing.

Here's how you get it to their mailbox...put a stamp on an envelope with the receipt inside, address it to them and MAIL it.

if they ask you to...then it may be ok...but I do know that you can't put anything...attatch anything to a mail box...in most cases if someone puts something in your mail box it is illegal. I would suggest having them put it inside your screen door...or someplace other than the mail box....unsolicited activities such as selling door to door where someone attatches someting to your mail box is absolutely forbidden. I am not sure about the law as far as you asking them to put it there...contact the USPS for a definate answer.

No. A person cannot give you permission to break a law. For instance if a person is suicidal and they ask you to murder them so they don't have to shame their family with suicide, the court will not laugh and say, "Oh well, they WANTED you to so I guess we'll let it slide."
I would make other arrangement with the person in question.

yes. The mailbox belongs to the person, not the post office.

Tape it to the side of their mailbox, or tape it to their front door :)
