You know it. I'd rather look stupid than look like a cocky crap.

I would say that if you can drive well without looking for a few seconds, you should wave. A wave is a friendly way of saying "hello" and you should wave back because it was thoughtful of that person to wave to you. However, when you see them wave and you are about to wave back, make sure they're not doing that to make you move out of the way first. =)

I'm not sure ive never had this happen to me i think id be a little freaked out, im a little paranoid just the other day i was driving along and my sister and niece were in the truck and someone pulled up next to us as we sat at a red light, my sister waved (that's her personality) so i wasn't surprised when i asked her who's that and she replied i dont know they were staring so i decided to wave and they did wave back.

This is a hard question. I dont want to sound prejudist or anything, but with all the stories of people being shot for stuff like this I always look to see if there are signs of gang activity. ie...
clothing, grills, the make of the car etc... If the person has young children with them, are older lets say over 65, or if they are a young child I do tend to wave back. It is really sad to know that you have to be carefull being too nice these days.

Here in south carolina, it is considered the friendly thing to do to wave, whether or not you know the person. So, yes, my hubby and I do wave at most people. He does it more than I do, but he does it on purpose--not as a reflex.

It really depends on what kind of wave it is. I sometimes wave people on to let them know I'm letting them pass me ,but then they misjudge it as just a regular "how do ya do?" wave. Then I get a bit disgruntled and wave them on again hoping they get the gesture the second time. If I don't know the person I wave back just because I feel awkward and a like a jerk if I don't. People I do know I salute because they know me and they know that I'm a bit unorthodox.

Has to be a reflex, because sometimes I wave back even when I have no clue who they are. Then sometimes I feel dumb, but what's the harm in waving!

Not usually. This happened to my friend, except they were not in a car. My friend was sitting on a bench and some guy with really scary teeth smiles and waves at her. She waves back to be nice.. but later, he sits on her for about 5 seconds and then gets up and walks away like nothing happened. It was so weird.

Always. Doesn't cost you anything to make a friendly wave. I wave if I want to change lanes in traffic and someone lets me go in front of them. I wave if someone stops to let me walk across the street. I wave just to say "Hi" or "Thank-you".

Yes, and sometimes its the "prom queen" wave too, that always gets some strange looks and sometimes I'll even honk the horn for added effect. Its a reflex for me.

Why not...it never hurts to be friendly. As far as the mistaken identity bit, I'd hate to think I accidentaly blew someone off and maybe hurt their feeling because I didn't recognise them. Maybe ir IS someone I know but I don't recognise their new hairstyle or they are driving someone else's car, etc.
