Liberia was formed as a way for African-American slaves to attempt to return to a homeland from which they had been brutally torn, separated, tortured in so many ways as to deny them their very provenance. Liberia, as its root indicated, represented a dream for freedom, a becoming whole, a nation in which the American Black could heal, if not return to the tribe or nation from which he or she came.

White guilt had nothing to do with it. Whites gave a d-a-m-n about Blacks then. This was a project conceived by Blacks, and supported by Blacks, and carried out by Blacks. Some "Whites" may have lent tacit support to it, but this was only to help rid the United States of a problem they no longer understood and no longer wanted.
