There was one correct answer - people! People created money. people created exchange and bartering. people realized that you could trade items of surplus with another to result in the exchange of supplies. that is one definition of civilization - efficient exchange of goods through supply lines and resulting in economic interaction. the person previously answering was right - we started exchanging "money" which was food and livestock and minerals and fabrics and building materials, etc. when markets grew, and defined uniform currency was needed which resulted in coins and paper money that have evolved into todays economy.

I think it was my friends Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Jackson. But I only use small bills.

The original "money" was actually anything that had some sort of value to someone else. People traded anything from nuts and berries, to cattle, to labor, to other people...

The mayans used cocoa beans as currency. So, infact, money did grow on trees. Or in the ground... not sure.
