What kind of qualification do they possess?

I have my Bachelor's degree in Psychology and am now going for my MSW, which is a Master's in Social Work.
A "social worker professional" as you called it is simply a person who has a job as a social worker. This can include a wide array of jobs and also of qualifications they have. Ideally, one who works as a social worker or a counselor should have at least a Bachelor's degree. The best fields to get that degree in would be sociology or psychology. But the best degree is the MSW; this will get you many more job opportunities and also will command a bigger salary, although no one is ever gonna get rich as a social worker! LOL.
With only a B.A. degree you will probably have to work in the government level, like a county or state office, or something like a welfare or financial assistance type office. But with an MSW you can go into the private sector and do actual counseling or therapy or even become a substance abuse counselor in a private rehab facility. You will get to do alot more hands-on work and counseling with the clients in the private sector, whereas in the gov. branch, and with a B.A. you will mainly be pushing files and have a huge caseload.

Social work has a wide range of choices. Department of Human Services, can do some counseling work. Hospitals use SWs'. Work with kids, adults in many organizations. Battered Women Shelters........................
