Neither cows' nor horses' sleeping habits have anything to do with weather. They both lay down because it feels like the right thing to do. Whether it's because they are tired, because they are cold, because they are sick, or because they like the way the grass feels, it has nothing to do with rain.

Horses lay down to sleep, though it is usually only for 20 minutes or so at a time. They do also nap standing up, by locking their knees. Sometimes they'll lay flat out, napping in a sunny field, scaring non-horse people who think they are dead! It's actually kinda funny...now if an adult horse lays down for an extended period of time there might be a real problem. If they are laying down and thrashing (not rolling in the dirt or fresh shavings, but real thrashing) they could be colicing and risk getting a twisted gut. There are other signs of colic, but the laying down and thrashing is a biggie.

I don't think it has anything at all to do with rain, they just lay down when they feel safe and are tired. If you notice in a field, the herd will lay down while a lone horse keeps watch.

Cows sleep laying down contrary to popular belief. Most horse sleep standing but a few like to sleep laying down. Younger horse also sleep laying down. Sometimes when a horse has colic then it will lie down to get in a more comfortable position.

All the horses we ever had did this but seemed to portend nothing more signify than they were tired of standing, sometimes they would even sleep but this was rare.

As for the cattle they do this a lot and rechew what they've eaten (for you city folk, they eat something and it goes into 1 stomach and later rechew it and send it to the second one (have 4 total).

it means the horse is tired and wants to have a sleep, horses can sleep standing up, but my horse weighs close to 600kgs, and sometimes he likes to get off his feet. He also lies on the ground so he can roll around in the dirt, dirt and mud can act as a sort of sunscreen.

Horses can sleep standing up or lying down, it's more commen for them to sleep standing up, however several times i've seen horses at my barn lying down and sleeping. However, if the horse lies down and rolls, they could have colic, when there intestines become twisted. If a horse simply lies down, it probably means it's just tired.

i have horses and it could be a number of things. The horse could be tired, and depending on the amount of time on the ground or rolling, it could have colic, in which it could die in a few hours

You know my son went to therapuetic riding so I ask the lady about that. She said it rarely means they are sick but it is more likely they are tired of standing & the grass can cool them off on a hot day.
