June Cleaver is an icon for the traditional mother of the 1950's. Played mother on TV's "Leave it to Beaver". Do you think that men would feel more secure with definded roles and reduce the divorce rate?

Back in June Cleaver's Day the "Family"was still in the Traditional form-Husband as the bread winner, Wife-stay at home Mom and Breadwinner, Kids and for the most part this was from financial security feasible But today and one of the major reasons the change occurred with more and more women going out into the workforce was and still is due to financial necessity ; there are also Women who work due to being a widow and need to support themselves and their child(ren),Women out in the workforce to support themselves and their child(ren) because there is no resposible man in the family(father of the child(ren)and then there are a small group of women(compared to those who work to make ends meet and for financial security later in life) who choose to have careers and do not fit the mold of just being a Homemaker but often combine both roles. I doubt the current divorce rate is due to men being confused as to their role due to women having usurped their role as the Supporter of the Family. The majority of men recognize the necessity of their wives and others of being among the work force due to the steadily increasing cost of living and the lines separating the poor from the middle class not being as clearly defined as back in the 1950's and lets not forget the huge escalation of medical costs and Insurance. More than likely there are quite a few women who would like nothing better than being able to stay home, to having their challenges being the next meal and kiss away hurts from their children instead of deadlines and to stay calm in long commutes in crawling traffic But , Hey you gotta eat The divorce rate has escalated due to this being a throw away society compared to the 1950's. When problems begin more and more its split instead of working together to solve for-splitting is easier and total commitments "until death do us part"seem to be fading into the past

Well, the fifties were a different time from today. The sixties and seventies brought the feminist movement(women's right to chose, Roe v. Wade) and now women and still affected by that, but at the same time not those feminists. Once a certain amount of time passes, women will begin to fall back into their previous role, but not all women. I believe back in the fifties were even a few whiny women. Although back then, divorce was unheard of because of the high religious intolerance. Nowadays, tolerance is greater, and the single parent is common. Women will never stop being whiny and men will never be perfect gentleman, but every once in a while we all do and that's how marriages work. If only people wouldn't marry the first idiot they met that made them "happy". That's what's making divorce rates high!

I believe that all women should have the choice to live the life of June Cleaver. Unfortunately, the feminists that I know at college (well most of them anyway) deem the "June Cleavers" of the world with disgust.

I do feel that most men would feel more secure with more defined gender roles in the family. However, since many families need dual incomes to live the lifestyle they want (or need), most of those families cannot afford it. In fact, the only place where I see more stay-at-home Moms than working Moms is in the military. That shouldn't be surprising since most military families are more traditional and tend to be conservative. My disclaimer is that my wife is a stay-at-home Mom. She doesn't want it any other way! Outside of school and church, she is determined to be the one to raise our children. It is nice that she is so involved with their lives!

Guy! I suspect you are, June Cleaver is a figment of somebody's imagination. I grow up during the 50's & the women I knew worked their butts off. Just like today the welfare of families depended on them. Only then they work for near to nothing. Remember my sister earning .80 an hour. Nurses were lucky to make $1.25 per hr. They worked. I never knew a June Cleaver have you.

It might reduce the divorce rate, simply because women would be more trapped in marriage without options for singlehood, but it might also lead to more homocide within marriage. People who can't get divorced ( very strict Roman Catholics, for instance) seem to have more spousal murder. Guess we all know why.
I really doubt most women today would buy the June Cleaver gig, but those folks had some good things going too.

No, but I do believe that all women should have the choice of living a June Cleaver like life if they wish. However, not many families could afford to live on one income.

If you want sanity to reign then NO, not all women should go back to the home. Women are just as important in the workplace as they are at home. Some women aren't cut out to be mothers at all and still have children but rely on others to care for them, which allows the parent to appreciate the time they have with their children. All women should not go back into the home, women's lib is a wonderful thing and men just need to get over their insecurities.

If a man is threatened by a woman who has a career and makes her own money, he isnt a real man, and needs to get over his ego trip. The only reason men dont want women to have jobs is so they can control the money, the house, and the wife.
......Actually I think men should stay home and raise the kiddies and let women have the careers for a change.

Get real. Yes, it would probably be better for the children but the fact that the world is different now than then it doesn't make sense. It's like saying let's go back to being hippies and having free love, with all the new diseases out there.

Men might feel better about it. How 'bout they (men) give up working and play June Cleaver for awhile?
