what im i doing if i want to do this for a career. Do i just go around and connect computers together to from a network

lol -- no, this is does not just include hooking computers together. Actually, if you want to do this for a career, you will need to know AT LEAST these basic fundamentals:

*TCP/IP configuration and principles (Layer I, II, and III)
*Cisco switch configurations and routing principles
*Network Infrastructure topology and development principles
*Schema configurations
*CAT 5 Cabling and punching principles

There is a lot more depending on security and what type of networks you are looking to set up as well(firewalls, gateways, DC configurations, Domain setups, etc). Hope this helps..

Setting up a network for an office is no easy task, it is very different from setting up a home network. You will be dealing with dividing the building into subnets having the correct number of users per router, adding static IP addresses so users can access data. Setting up a secure email server is another task. It is a very dynamic job.
