If you don't drive very long or very fast on the odd shaped tire, no significant damage will occur. But, they is a reason tires are sized the way they are. Suspension, handling, steering, and braking rely on a certain size tire. Do the math on the rotational moment of inertia of a tire moving horizontally at 70 mph. The faster you go, the car will pull one way or another causing excessive wear on tread and steering linkages. Tire tread patterns and diameter will also affect braking. The disimilar tire tread will not stop at the same rate as the other tires. Hard braking may cause the car to skid. Incorrect tire size will affect the speedometer and odometer. The gears used to display speed and distance are based on a specific wheel size. Change the wheel size and the gear will run fast or slow. The gear can be changed but its expensive. Suggest using the wheel size that the manfacturer designed the car for.

Well I don't think it'll really make a difference. Besides used tires
are only temporally. And as soon as her New tires and rims are
in then change them and tell her to make sure they are balanced
and aligned. Her tires will last long, they won't wear out like her
other tire did. I just purchased 4 new tires and I had them do all
of the above. If someone says different from me then tell her to take it back to the dealer and tell him that the tire is not the right
size, they should fix the problem. Tell her to always get a receipt.
I got all my info from my Dad, before he passed away. If it wasn't
for him I wouldn't know anything.

Different size tires on the driving axle (front axle of front-wheel drive or rear axle of a rear-wheel drive) can cause accelerated wear of the differential, and may also cause some handling issues, but a 1 cm difference doesn't seem like enough to worry about... especially if she's going to replace all the wheels and tires soon anyway.
Just to be on the safe side, I'd recommend if she has a front-wheel drive car, that the put the larger tire on the rear of the car until she gets her new rims and tires, and can replace it permanently.

Did your car come with 2 different tire sizes? Do you think there may be a reason for that?

One Centimeter is slightly more than 3 /8 ".That will hurt nothing.
Wait for your new tires and drive as you normally would.
A new tire, over time, will wear that much.

The tire that is taller will wear out faster because it wont meet the ground like it is supped to but i don't see how it can damage the car.the alignment will be out of whack but your car is tuff enough to take it. it might squeal on corners and you need to watch for wear on the edges of the tire you should be good
