Im in the process of adding a new electrical outlet and was wondering is there any nice and easy tricks to run the wire behind the wall through the studs. From past experience I would use a long flex drill bit and drill through the middle of the stud and fish the wire through. Another way I did it was cut out the drywall and notch the stud, place wire then use a nail plate then repatch and paint. Is there any other options or are these two my best bet.

Your problem is not a National Code issue, it is local. (I won't go into the whole union/Democrat construction control thing for Chicagoland...) Running on the ceiling is an option of you have room for the conduit radius between the structural ceiling and a lower framed ceiling. I believe EMT is acceptable vs. RMC. You're likely going to have to cut 3' pieces and use a lot of couplings, there are some trade methods that could eliminate a few couplings, but if you are not familiar with these ways it will take more time to learn that to just cut it. Not really any simple way, you can leave some studs out during framing, drill holes for straight pipe in studs adjacent to where the pipe needs to be, then slide the pipe into the studs after install. But I am an electrician, and I would be cutting a bunch of pieces trying to use the joist space and dropping vertical whenever I could. One unfortunate effect of this law is spaces get wired to the minimum requirement, and this encourages the overuse of extension cords.

If you are really wanting to go through the wall, for example if your adding a plug and getting poiwer from the exisiting one.

Mark the top of your baseboard, remove the baseboard and cut below the line and remove the drywall. Drill away run your cables screw the drywall back on and put the molding back on and it will look you didn't do anything.

I would prefer to come from the basement or ceiling and down the wall myself.

I definitely would not drill through studs without knowing what may be on either side of the stud such as other wiring or plumbing. Can notch and plate or cut slightly bigger hole and drill through center of stud with enough wall removed to check both sides of stud.Good luck.

cut your hole for your remodel box to go into. then drill thorugh the top or bottom plate of the wall. Then just fish your wire down to your recept.

when my dad was wiring our house, he took drilled through the floor and fished upward, then he used staples to hold it down. from what you've told me, it sounds like you're doing just fine.
good luck!
