My computer broke down and I want to try and salvage some of the parts, I have a friend who wants the DVD/CD drive but I have no idea how to tell if it would be compatible with her computer. she has a gateway and this is from an HP, would it work?

Also, my new tower is a DELL and there doesnt seem to be any place to plug in the speakers, I plugged them into the out and they are so quiet I can barely hear anything & I turned all the volume up all the way.

The DVD drive should fit any PC.
Check the volume control by clicking the speaker icon in the system tool bar at the bottom of the screen

PhilipW already answered about DVD.. What refers to sound:
1) try to connect speakers directly to your sound card (back side of case - unplug that wire which goes to front and place wire from your speakers. )
2) if that don't help, you shold check how great is the resistance of your speakers. Should be about 2 to 8(last=headphones) ohms If it is too small, you could try to add a resistor or simply plug some other speakers in serial(but before - check if your speakers don't go in shortcut(ground is connected to wave vire))..
