I live in N.C. too, and I have seen some BIG ones.

Roaches can get into your house in many ways; grocery bags, boxes, and (this is gross, sorry) kids backpacks. My kids spent the night at a friends house in N.Y. and they had them in their backpacks!!! Yuck!

Try spraying around your house, or call an exterminator.

No matter how clean the home (or meticulous the cleaner), roaches are an unfortunate part of life on planet Earth. They can live on virtually ANYTHING to eat, and breed very quickly. My suggestion is to call a pest control company and go on contract for a minimum of a year. It may be a little pricey, but the health of you and your child is worth it.

well it was probably a palmetto bug which isn't a roach, but sure looks like one!
roaches are generally smaller, like less than one inch long, and you won't just see one, you'll see several. and you'll keep seeing them, if not every day, then most days. you see them more first thing in the morning when you turn on the kitchen light, and they scurry for cover.
some homes are infested, and even if you keep it immaculate it is still very hard to get rid of them, once the house is truly infested.
but, hopefully, it was just a big scary yucky palmetto bug, and you won't even see any more. they live in SC, NC, and FL. maybe alabama and miss and Louisiana, too. they are dark dark brown and about 2 inches long, and are harmless.

There are millionaires where I live, that have roach problems in thier homes. No matter how clean you are they can be there. Try "combat roach baits". Sprays often don't work well.

Oh dear!

Is there a chance that the roach eggs rode in on your groceries? Sevn dust and diatomaceous earth are supposed to be good against them.

Good luck!

They are outdoor roaches that come inside sometimes. I think everyone in the South gets them, but not everyone admits it!

Boric acid, it is very effective when used properly for killing
cockroaches and most other insects.
You can also get a house lizard, they are natural enemies and will eat them. More information at http://tinyurl.com/ofxkk
