Well, if it's something really serious, then i would try to get help form some people that know the situation.
But usually, you can:
- Talk to them, and be encouraging.
- Take them somewhere where they can have fun and forget about what they're sad about.
- Just be there for them whenever you can.
- Get them a gift that will cheer them up. It doesnt have to be expensive.
- Try to make them smile or laugh. Be funny.
Well, try some of those. I don't know if they will work or not, but i hope they will
Good Luck!

A good thing to do is to now why he/she is sad. Next, think of things that they like and try to cheer them up. If it involves hurting someone in a non-playful manner i might say to refrain away from it but who am i to tell u that.
One last thing that works with some is to try to talk to them about the reason of why they are sad, tell them that they can tell you anything(only if true.) In the end just try to comfort them.

it depends on what your friend is upset about on what you could say. but maybe relate it to something that happend to u and say it will be alright and say how you got over what ever the problem was. just spend time with them. maybe take them to a fun place... a movie or something so they dont think about what there sad about so much. I hope he/she feels better!!! good luck.

La De Frickin Da! that usually works.....
No seriously though, it really depends on WHY they are sad, but just listening to them and cracking jokes usually helps....
Are YOU sad honey??????? Do YOU need some words??????

I would allow them to cry on my shoulder for awhile, then I would get a cool cloth and a cup of tea. After a bit, I would encourage them to talk about their troubles, and then try to point out everything that's good about their life.

Take them out for a day on the beach - bit of sunshine works wonders.

If i find them crying then i would walk up and rub their back, just to let them know that i'm there for them. then after they cryed then i would let them tell me what made them sad, if they wanted to. if they don't then i wouldn't push for the information.
