When you do heavy workouts you are breaking down your muscles and sometimes bones and tendons which your body rebuilds stronger. When you give blood your body makes new blood. If you body is weak this will take up a lot more energy, minerals and proteins etc from your systems to build more blood. If your body is very strong, healthy and you have a lot of blood it will not take much energy, minerals which you do not already have in excess.

Therefore, giving blood is like a tough workout - if you are ready for it shouldn't do any harm if you are weak it may slow you down a bit for a while.
Excess trace minerals, vitamins are stored in our livers for a few monthes.

I donate all the time. I have had no side effects. On occasion I may get a bruise from the needle site. Some people may feel a little tired. You have to be healthy to donate, It doesn't necessarily make you healthy to donate. It helps others become more healthy.

How long will it take to replenish the pint?

Blood volume or plasma is replaced within 24 hours. Red cells need about 4-8 weeks for complete replacement.

How will I feel after the donation?

Most people feel just great! Donors who know what to expect and have eaten regular meals before donating are fine. After donating, drink extra fluids for the next 24 hours.

I used to donate whole blood, now I donate just the platelets. You have to wait 8 weeks to donate whole blood but can donate more often with platelets.

No, it does NOT make you healthier. You do good to someone else, you regenerate by the end of the day but it does NOT make you healther because you need blood yourself. It's a good gesture to do it once in a while but you need to take care of your own health too.
