Glance down at the outside shoulder...you should be rising as it moves up, and sitting as it goes down. You can even sing a song in your head to help you keep rhythem. Good luck at the show and have fun.

I hate to sound mean but you have no business being in a show if you cannot get your diagonals.
But, what I did to kind of learn how the horses trot worked (when I was learning diagonals) I lounged the horse, and watched it.. When the outside front leg went out, I counted "1" and then "2" for the other leg, and "1" for the outside leg again.. so it's 1-2-1-2, etc,etc.. Then when I would go to ride, my instructor had me on a lounge line and all I did was sit to the trot, and watch the outside leg. When it goes forward, you start counting 1 and do the 1-2-1-2 thing again, and finally, when you feel comfortable, and get back to "1", just start posting and go with it.. Well good luck with learning diagonals.

When you are posting trot the saying is rise ind fall with the leg by the wall. When the leg closest to the rail goes forward stand up. Try to be sneaky when looking. To keep your diagonal try to sense the horses tempo, chanting up, down, up, down in you head works well. If you just want to practice picking up diagonals try it a the walk. When you are at the show you can also create a signal with you trainer or parent that they will give you if you are on the wrong diagonal.

Good luck!

I struggled with it for a while. The trainer put me on a horse on the lunge line and had me post to a certain count. Post five strides sit five, as she counted "Post and, two and, three and, four and, five and, sit and, two and so on. When your get the hang of it switch to threes then twos. It absolutely does wonders. She could watch and say late, early, good whatever so I wasn't looking down watching the shoulder but learning to feel he correct leg and timing. Have someone try it with you on a steady horse and good luck.

The purpose of posting is that when working hard in small circles or turns your weight is forward off the saddle to help the horse bring it's inside hind leg under itself. Tha is why you rise on the outer leg (on the wall) in case you are curious.

***chant ( in your head ) to yourself " rise and fall with the leg on the wall"

*** Your not supposed to stare down just a quick glance to check it"

*** If you lose is it sit a "beat" to get back.

If you can practice on a horse try doing huge figure 8's and sitting a " beat" the in the center when you change direction to change diagonals.
When you know you have correct diagonal try memorize that feel.
*** Good Luck in your horse show.

The easiest way to learn posting is to first sit the trot...as you bounce, start counting "one" and "two" each time that you bounce. Watch the outside shoulder and rise as it is moving forward and sit as it is moving back. The counting really helps... Remeber that you can "glance" down at that outside shoulder to get you started, but don't keep your head down and "watch" the shoulder for too long or that will throw off your form--once you think you've got it, trust yourself and go with it (you'll get more points taken off for looking down and throwing off your overall form--which will also throw off your horse--than you will for being on the wrong diagonal). Remember...practice makes perfect.

Just try to get in a rhythm going with your horse. If a song in your head helps you keep your posting consistent, do that and you can post on the beat (make sure its an up beat song!).

Are you ready for a show? If you are post as smooth as you can and when you change make a smooth bounce into the other. Also look down at the inside shoulder and see if ypu are on the right one. When you change sit 4 strides!

You should be sitting when the outside foreleg touches ground. Also when you have to change diagonals, sit for two beats then start rising again.

Good luck at the show, hope you do well.
