Usually, picture files cannot infect your computer, but there are variants that can cause you harm. Your best bet is, of course, to not download the files. The second best bet is to make sure your anti-virus software is functional and up-to-date with the latest information.
Under no circumstances should you click on any file with a .bat or .exe extension that you are unsure of. These are programs that can cause serious harm to your computer.
If you need an anti-virus program, try AVG anti-virus. It is free for personal use and does a good job of catching viruses. Link is below. While you're there, download their spyware program as well and use that together with the anti-virus program.

Yes, viruses can be hidden inside zip files. However if you have a good and up to date virus scanner, it will either scan the zip file, or catch the virus in real time when you unzip the file.
For absolute safety, only download files from reputable sites.

The zip file itself won't cause a virus. It could very well have a file inside the zip archive that either has a virus or IS a virus, and when you un-zip (uncompress) the archive, if you run that program you'll be infected. Most virus checkers can check the files inside a zip archive, before you un-zip it, so run a check first and don't touch any files that get flagged.

.zip files dont speard virus until they are extacted.
if u have doubt dont access files form that zip arhive.
try attaching that .zip file if it is uploaded by yahoo it is less chance of it have a virus in it.

Any file might have malware in it,scan it with whatever AV/AT prog you have.
