While on a vacation to NYC I want to go up to Philly for the day. I was thinking of going up on a Sunday in December. Are the touristy things open on a Sunday? Would there be a better day to visit? Also should I spend the night there, or can you see enough in just 1 day and take the train back to NYC in the evening?

Thanks for any advice!

check out the museums... the philly art museum and the franklin institute are great. spend some time walking around on south street, they have lots of cool shops and good places to eat. if you want to do the historical thing, check out the liberty bell and independence hall... that doesn't take too long. there is a really cool restaurant called pod in philly, it's like no other place i've ever eaten at. the website is: http://www.podrestaurant.com/

I lived in Philly and love Philly. But really, NYC is THE world. I would not waste any time out of my NYC visit, if I were you. If you insist, just do the historical stuff in Philly, and one day is plenty for that. True, Philly has great restaurants, great museums, great shopping (and without tax on clothing). But, nothing compares to NYC. There is so much and so many neighborhoods in NYC. Juice your vacation there.

Is it worth spending three hours of your day traveling? That's about what it will take for the round trip on NJ Transit Train.

P.S. When in NY, Philly is down(South) not up. Minor point I know.

Philadelphia has a lot to offer, from historical sites to a myriad of creative arts, so it really depends on where your interests lie. Yes there are activities available on Sundays. Here are a few links:
