my dad was a carpet fitter for 30 years, if your using rubber backed carpet use the spray glue (this will go straight to your head lol) if your using the hessian backed carpet, its heavier than the rubber backed, so to be on the safe side you should put gripper down, you dont want to go flying when you get out the bath, but at the end of the day you do what you think....we also have the carpet going up the side of the bath lol... were very old fashioned in my house....and we have a crappy bath lol....

Don't use gripper rods, use double sided adhesive carpet tape to keep it in place or spray adhesive specially made for fitting carpets.
