Some of them were based on real things! 'Ring a ring a rosy' for example was based on the black plague. 'London bridge is falling down' is about the fires of london. 'wee willie winkie' i think is about a kidnapper or pedophile or something, but don't quote me on that one. some are just made up, some are riddles.

Many of them were actually made up during a war. Like London Bridge Is Falling Down. Of course after decades and centuries of the same thing over and over again, the story changes, and now a days, those are just nursey rhymes. Also, that depends on which nursery rhyme your talking about. Most of them though, portrey something that happens in real life, in kid terms...

Many times they are based on real things or events, for example: Ring around the Rosie a pocket full of poesy's. This Nursery rhyme actually refers to the red pustules that would form on a person's skin who is suffering the effects of the bubonic plague.
