Ah hah.... this one is a tough question. It really depends on what view of humanity you accept. Are you a naturalist or a theist? If you are a naturalist... at what point can you start counting? Even then it is hard to say for sure. I know you wanted a definate answer, but the fact is that it isn't so clear cut as many people who will answer you believe.

Someone brought this up in my history class last year; I do not know how true it is, but my history prof, a very well-read man, thought about it and said "You know, that may not be too far off": That there are as many people alive today as have ever died.

Seeing as we're near 7 billion now, that would put it at 13 to 14 billion.

I have no idea. Even so I can tell you the guesses so far are very low and way off base.

We realize the benefit of the natural process of death - because the human race itself would be in a miserable state today all across the globe. People would literally be stacked one on another, and the animals? No room for animals - they would be long extinct.

In the state of despair (loss of loved ones) is a glimmer of light for others.
