When you live in London (or New York or anywhere big) you walk past a million people a day so it would be just too much trouble to acknowledge anyone you don't already know. Most people who live in London aren't from London: it isn't the people who are unfriendly, it's the situation. If you go to a small place in Britain you will find people are very warm and friendly and once you get to know Londoners you will find that they are too. Try to meet British people, for example, if you are single, try using a dating site or join a club. It is a myth that British people are cold: they make very good friends if you take the trouble to get to know them.

It's not just you! British people are quite fiercely protective of their personal space, and we'll basically go to any lengthes to avoid making eye contact with anyone on the bus, on the street etc - doesn't matter what colour you are or where you're from.
Just the way it is I'm afraid, I do this myself and it's not that I have anything against the other people on the bus (well, maybe the ones who have loud phone conversations, make out, or deface the bus), I just don't want to deal with anyone else while I'm trying to get to work or the shops or wherever.

I am a British national but of mixed race parentage - it is not a white British thing that you are talking about it is a SOCIETY thing. We live in an age where some people are scared to interact with strangers for fear of what it would bring.

For you to label everyone who is white and does not smile at you as white British is prejudicial and unless you can support this claim by asking every person who does not smile at you, "Are you not smiling at me because you are white British?" you are going to alienate yourself against this segment of society.

...maybe you smile like a nutter and are scaring people or maybe you smell and that is why no one wants to sit next to you...ever thought about how you come across to others?

I really think this is a big city thing, people are just not thinking about being friendly or sociable on their way to/from work - don't take it personally, everyone is miserable to everyone when commuting because taking public transport is generally the least enjoyable part of the day - focus on making some friends, going out & having fun & London will seem a much better place

As an Irish person who have lived in London for four years. I found them to be the most unfriendly people on earth. They don't have a soul. I even got lost in London and asks for directions and they just ignore you. Ever see then on the underground they don't make eyes contact they this cold stiff upper lip attitude. I found people from the North of England more friendlier. London can be a lonely place to live.

Well Im white British and I get the same treatment. People just are not very trusting or friendly. Dont take it personally. My son asked for help and directions one day in a different area and was totally ignored-he asked me why but I have no real answers. It isnt you or your race. They trat each other just the same!
