The best way to check a telescope is to point it directly into your neighbour opposites window. Then put it in focus but, don't keep it there too long or else you'll be nicknamed Tom ;]

I just completely explained to someone how to use a telescope. Look up the question "What is a pitching shaft?" for a step by step explaination of how to use your telescope.

Looking at an OTRON telescope (a brand I have just learned of) keep in mind while reading how to use it that this telescope doesn't have a german equatorial mount. It has a cheapo "good luck finding anything because I don't see slow motion knobs" mount. I can't really tell though so you'll have to decide about it. Everything else is the same though as far as calibrating the view finder and such.

There are two different types of telescopes refractors and reflecters. I've got a reflecter and its about 9 inches lense. Basically I allign the small eys scope on top to what I want to look at then look through the main part and its in the right place. Its hard to say really not knowing what type you have. Have you thought about searching the internet for your type of telescope and seeing if you can download any instructions. I find it hard to find things in space as its so big really you need so-ordinates. The I get blown away! You can buy really good ones that connect to a computer then you type in the co-ordinates of what you wnat to see and it finds it for you. Ger a sky map and it might help but you need to know a bit about astronomy. It is so frustraing as I dont know much either so mostly look at the moon!!!!
