You are like a big bag of air. Besides the air your body is made of fat and water. The fat floats the air floats and the water stays neutral. So doing nothing you will float. It's really hard to drowned.
But the more water the easier it is to float. It is called displacement. Think about it why does an aircraft carrier float? Because there is more water than there is ship. It would sink in a pool if it fit.
To float all you need do is lay on your back and kick your feet. You will float . Use your arms to move yourself and turn. Don't panic. The only people who can't swim are people who think they can't swim. The other way of floating is the dog paddle. you just paddle like your dog does. keep your head above water. It really is easy but it is an inefficient way to swim. The back is easier.

if you want to float on your back, your toes, nose and belly button should all be above the surface of the water. Arch your back so you're flat. Lay your head back like you're sleeiping on your back. DON'T PANIC! You should be able to see your toes if you look at them, (but don't for a long time - you'll fold in half and sink). Arms wherever they're comfortable - out to the sides is usually the best place. REALX and breathe!!

The most important part is bellybutton up. you're head and feet will stay up by instinct.

Best way is to get in shallolw water and practice Backfloating,Deadmanfloat , Scrunchfloat and Dogpaddle. These are like the main things I learned that helped me as a lifegaurd and as a Sailor.
The Scrunchfloat is when you do a Deadmans float and scrunch up your body to preserve heat and core tempature.

i'm 6ft 2, 196 lbs. I weigh what I might want to or extremely 10 lbs. over searching on the source. i look underweight, notwithstanding. pores and skin and bones in some parts of my body and fairly flabby. I theorize that maximum my weight is bones, some fat, and little or no muscle. If I stay contained in the water completely upright and punctiliously nonetheless, i do no longer SINK,interior of seconds my legs flow to the exterior and that i'm floating on my back. I confirm when you consider that i'm regularly bones, and heavy bones at that, I flow and that i look like I weigh lower than I do. Bones flow.

It's about relaxing. If you lay on your back, look to the sky lift your legs up, you'll float.

you can tread water as well - meaning you move your arms in a a circular motions while kicking your legs in a similar motion trying to use minimal energy.

you tread water or you learn to swim before going into the deep end.

the easiest way to swim is to learn to doggy paddle first.. oh, and keep in mind that unless you are Obese, you must keep moving while in the water or you will sink.

If you completely relax you will float. moving around is what keeps you in an upright position.
