Hi all, I have a beautiful white knitted baby rug that my mother hand knitted. She made my sisters and I the same and its been used and used and washed and washed,. 3 grown boys later its in perfect condition and I hate to see it folded up in my cupboard. Besides a throw rug has anyone got ideas on what I could do with it, I dont mind it being cut up to be used for something crafty aslong as it can be kept.

Find or have made a pillowcase in an oblong or square, out of lace or netting (so the blanket/shawl/rug shows through), with a zipper on one side. Fold the shawl to fit the pillow or make the pillow to fit the folded piece. Display it on a sofa or bed. It will be safe and you can take it out from time to time to enjoy the memories. Best to You!

You could put it on a doll. If you have room to diplay it. If not than make a scrap book. Find some pictures that have the kids in the shawl and then cut some peices out for the scrapbook page. That would be awesome! Good luck!

If you can keep it, it might be a great hierloom. However, this month's Martha Stewart Living Magazine has a feature on how to recycle old knitted things. The article recommends felting the items (washing and drying them- this keeps them from unraveling and gives them a tougher weave) and has several patterns for stuffed animals that look very cute. If you do this, you might be able to make enough stuffed creations for each of your sons (to be passed on to future grandchildren), rather than deciding on which son to give it to.

Fix a showdow box with sentimental things that belonged to your children. Use the shawl/rug for the background.

If you scrapbook, you could base a page around a scrap of the rug. If you encase it in a clear, protective envelope (available at scrapbooking stores or online), it will be safe for viewing forever!

I agree with Weapondrift. Put it in a frame and perhaps have a plaque on the frame engraved with names of your sons. Another alternative could be to turn it into a cushion or pillow cover.

use it as a mini blanket or a scarf for yourself so that way it will always be with you and you won't have to cut it up or anything.
another idea is you could turn it into a coffe table doyle like the runner kind.

I think it can be cut depending on the size and used in a shadow box. Hang it on the wall in the shadow box along with other memorabilia!
