I joined the Navy . . .

If I were 18 again, I would go straight to college.

All good options. Travel would be the best thing, and if you don't want to join the service to see the world, join a crew on a cruise line. Or, spend a few months doing whatever job anyone will pay you to do and at then go to Europe on a student pass, stay at youth hostels, take day jobs here and there to supplement your cash flow while you are abroad. And, don't come home until you are ready and want to settle down and study because at 18 years old, I have to tell you right now, you aren't nearly ready to strike out in the world on your own for anything but a gap year experience and you aren't close to having the education you need to have any kind of a decent life.

Travel, explore the world, find out just exactly how small this country really is and just how unimportant most of the things you have placed a priority on really are in the scheme of things.

Make this the best year of your life, something to tell your grandchildren about, and if you get the right education and a fullfilling career, they will already know what you did with the rest of your life.

If you are male or female join the military. If you are not too thrilled about what is going on overseas and fear for your well being then join, but get a guaranteed position. You know, as a cook, or hospital tech, dental tech, something that you can use once you are out. If that isn't too appealing then let me tell you this, I would give anything to be able to go back to 18 and get into the nursing field. It is one of the most needed professions now and they make $'s. You will have to go and get student loans but on a registered nurses salary you'll have it paid off in one year! Just go to the college that has a nursing program near you and talk. Just talk. If you are a guy it doesn't matter, in fact (this is gonna make the girls angry) men make more than women in nursing. I don't know why, heavy lifting or something, but they do, as a rule.

Get a job washing dishes at a restaurant and show some interest in the food. Talk to the head chef and they might be willing to take you on as a junior chef and train you up. Or a job in a hotel may open many doors in the hospitality/tourism industry.

I'd start my own Internet business (like selling on eBay, yahoo auctions, and my own web site) and whatever I did otherwise, I'd not touch the assets of this business until it could support me WITHOUT me working at it and I'd retire without the benefit of a marriage and a divorce so that a divorce judge would not take those assets and give them to someone which didn't deserve any portion of it...
I give the assets of this business to WHOM I WANTED to give them to.
