I've been hearing for years that the young people coming out of our public schools are poorly educated. Well, I am now beginning to believe it. It's what they call, "the dumbing down of America". I used to think that this was just a myth, but I guess it's true after all.

We are not all Americans! The whole world has indeed dumbed down though. Too much tolerence of bad spelling in schools-it is no longer circled in red in-case it give the kid some sort of inferiority omplex. So they all rely on spell checks but as they have not learned to spell or speak properly they do not realise that a spell check will only show up words not in the dictionary and when you get similar words which look alright in writing,or a word the same, with a different spelling and a different meaning (like in sew and so) the are not picked out. Forget the spell checks-they get you in bad habits. Proof read and use a dictionary.

At speech class with 30 16-year-olds, I'd hear a lot of "verbal clutter," as they say. Like, you know, cool, say man, uh, um, yeah, and everything. Growing up with an old man, I tend to pick up the talking habits of one. So I never did learn to speak with verbal clutter, and I never used yeah unless it was on purpose. Of course, on paper I do cheat by writing "Ja"- which sounds the same as yeah.
But what struck me was the inability to communicate themselves. Being raised on McGuffey's readers, I was taught that one must make himself more than heard; one must also make himself thoroughly understood. The era had raised many fine orators, and I think Daniel Webster was from that age.
But the question was about spelling. I think it's because of such things as IMs and certain forums. If you look at the size of the IM box, you will see that it is very small. This discourages proof-reading and promotes abbreviations. And of course it is very fast and when the day is through, all the communications will be thrown in the trash.

Say, that's a righteous question you asked.

Not only is it due to the education system, its also to do with the parenting. I am relatively young myself, ( Studying in the UK). I still see the dumbing down of the UK as down to schooling but also, parents are becoming less educated themselves and therefore not teaching their children about the importance of schooling. Youths of today just aren't interested. Media might be playing a part in this also. Lots of factors to consider, and very interesting topic.

I'm 57 years old with a college degree and even I spell some words wrong. Especially when I'm trying to type fast so I can be the first to answer a question.

Even this forum has a simple spell check so there is little excuse for misspellings. People just need to slow down and pay better attention to make their questions and answers look more credible.

You are absolutely right !!! I can't believe that these kids don't know how to phrase a sentence or spell simple words. Let alone ask an intelligent question. Half the time you have to decifer the question because it is phrased so badly or they can't spell. And I am also amazed at the simplest questions as well ! Don't their parents teach them anything about life ??? I guess not.

the answer lies in pshychological factors..
when we consider writing some thing for others we do't pay much attention in language..just they feel to convey what they need
while coming to other side they pay atention while they typing because they feel there must be good presentation along with what they have to convey may of little interest

Who cares it is te question that matter. But I see where you are coming from. Some schools hire new teachers that don't teach correctly or don't explain it right it isn't always the kids fault!
