I think that the Alpha Smart is a good tool. But, you can also use things like notetakers in class and have a person read you an exam, if oral presentation of information is better for you to process. Like the other person said, you might have a visual processing problem or a form of dyslexia. It could also be more of a learning issue. All of these things can be tested by your special ed teacher or school psych. Since you are 18, you can request this evaluation to be done, or your parents can request it at anytime during the school year. You can also look into occupational therapy for your handwriting disorder. They will give you muscle building skills to strengthen your hand and fine motor skills. I would start by pinching clothes pins and picking up bean and moving them from point A to point B. It's boring, but effective. Good luck with all of your evaluations.

it sounds like you have some visual processing issues..... do you understand more when it is not presented in a visual manner? I know you said you can do all these things on the computer and that is a definate tool to help with your learning disability.... you may also have some deficits in fine motor skills (i.e. holding pencil)

Granted I barely know the situation so don't take this info too serioulsy. You said you get special ed services, so you must have an IEP (in the US) there you can include any modifications or accomendations.

Good luck

You sounds like you have Dyslexia( difficulty coping written symbols. ( my son has it) but they do have test , try using a red sheet of film paper, it helps to keep the letters from jumping or mixing up , put the film behind the sheet of paper you are reading ,or have you ever had the red glasses they give you to watch a 3D movie. / Here is another test, draw a shape then hold it down below a mirror, you should be able to mimic the drawing if you can't it is a possibility it could be Dyslexia, I don't know if you're still in but you can see an OT/PT for your hand coordination............... Practice makes perfect, when you read or see words try to write everything that you read or summarize it on paper, that will help with your writing skills. If you have a good teacher maybe he/she will let you take a verbal exam, my oldest son has the same trouble and his teacher allows him to take verbal exams anything that will make him successful.

Ask to school Psycologist to give you a new evaluation. Then, directly ask him what he suggests you should do. Or just ask your case teacher to read your IEP to you, and explain in to you what it all means. Your case teacher knows what what you have, it is your right to ask.

There's a special site that helps out people with LD(learning disabilities). It's called www.sparktop.org. You'll figure out what it's called there- and it can help you.
