Most conservatives have no issue with welfare. What they DO have an issue with (and this is where my conservatism comes in as well!) is people abusing the system, which happens far too often. I've seen it! Many times!
I have no problem with helping the poor. I've gone and fed the homeless myself, and it's something I enjoy doing! I was homeless once, I know how it is!
What I have a problem with is the poor who become complacent in their situation, and don't seek to get out of it. Why bother? They're still getting that check every month, and all they have to do to keep getting it is not get married, not get a job, not get an education, keep having kids, and expect everyone else to carry their weight!
Then there are people like my sister, who has five kids (one just moved out), and gets less monthly than my husband and I, who are childless (he's US Army, we receive roughly $2400 a month. And we live on post, so we don't pay for rent or electricity.). And yet, she somehow makes it work! WITHOUT welfare!
She takes care of a mentally handicapped boy, and gives good rates to other mothers who need cheap child care. AND she's highly involved in animal rescue, and a conservative Republican.
So what's this about not wanting to help the poor? That's crap. Conservatives believe in hand-UPS, not hand-OUTS.

Man your preaching to the choir! This tax cut has been around for a while and all it has done has move jobs to other countries or just made them disappear all together. Congress want's to extended them because these tax cuts are for them their part of the wealthiest 2%, same reason they give themselves raises. I've been looking for a job everyday for 6 months and, at least in Southern Indiana in a 100 mile radius, there are none I mean absolutely none! I filled out an application yesterday that said show up between 1 and 5 pm and at 12:45 pm when I got there, 15 people were already in front of me and 10 more showed up behind me. This was for a minimum wage job that was part time and 15 minutes before it said to be there 26 of us poor souls had shown up. I don't even know how many people are going for this one job probably over 100 i'd imagine. Just wait for December 13th when about 2 million people go from poverty to homeless. The easy answer is politicians are greedy and really only care about themselves and their own pocket books. If I had money I'd buy some stocks now because once "us" peons are broke they are gonna have a record day on wall street, I don't know how, but just watch. Even better we get mandatory health care in 2012, most of us can't afford health care now, let alone having a new bill each month. I hope the 2 million unemployed riot and just mess as much stuff up as we can. Anarchy baby!

A Conservative is a person who would much rather help people to help themselves, instead of giving handouts to people. (Save that for the kids on Halloween). You know the example "Teach a man to fish...." We believe that's the true Christian way to help people. It requires faith that ALL people have what it takes, to learn how to take care of themselves and their families.
Most Conservatives believe that if all the wealth in the U.S. were divided equally among all 300 million of us,many of the poor would end up flat broke in less than a year. That's only one reason why Conservatives don't like welfare programs and handouts. It takes a gigantic, bloated government to administer those programs. True Conservatives want small government. I know what you're thinking, and NO, Bush is not a real Conservative. He's a phony, just like his old man.
The Liberals like the POWER that these programs give them. It builds up their self esteem. And it gives some of them a golden opportunity to line their pockets by committing graft and corruption.

I'm not a conservative, but I find it funny that they say the government is "stealing" thier money?
these are the same people that preach patriotism and not ever saying anything bad against the government... but then call it an evil theif that can't be trusted in the next post...
I don't get it?
and there are churches everywhere... but, go to another country without a welfare system and you'll see just how much the CHURCH is helping the poor... if you have problems finding them, check out the nearest shanty town...
and I love the whole "teach a man to fish analogy"... where exactly are they teaching them? not giving them something is not teaching them... raising tuition and cutting funding to schools doesn't help teach them...
it's not "teach a man to fish"... it's "I've got my fish, scr*w you, you figure it out yourself"... and that's apparently the "Christian way"?

A Conservative is some one who believes that a government that is strong enough to give you all that what you want is strong enough to take away all that you have.
If you truly want to help the poor don't just give them money. Make them work and truly appreciate what it takes to live. It should be my choice to help. It shouldn't be mandated by the government.

Do you imagine some compulsory requirement for Christians to "help the poor" through taxation?
How does this factor in with "stewardship?" Or working if you wish to eat?
Oh, never mind... If you truly wish to understand, read the New Testament, Timothy would be a great start... Whole chapters devoted to the concept of "church welfare," which has NOTHING to do with the government...
Sorry, I digressed... To answer your question, conservatives want to preserve the Constitution--no liberal perversions. Preserve the social mores which are the fabric of the USA. Preserve as much of our own earned money as we can. Reverse the trend of big government--and associated out of control spending...

Sorry, Stewie, it's not that simple. Liberals love to take credit for 'helping' the poor when they 'give a man a fish'. Usually someone else's.
Conservatives are less concerned with feelings. They'd rather 'TEACH a man to fish'.
In the long run, which tactic is really more caring?

Charity and helping your fellow man is part of Christianity. That is a complete difference from a having the money stolen from you to put into an inefficient program that does not aid the people it is intended to help but instead enslaves them in an endless cycle of poverty.
But even if you favor social programs wouldn't you embrace tax cuts since they increase revenue to the government by energizing the economy. That more money for you to hand out Liberal hero JFK knew this, he cut taxes and the economy blossomed.

Conservatives are against welfare programs. Welfare programs aren't effective, they just teach people to be dependent on the government. Welfare programs should be handled by private charities and religious organizations.
