I think you can blame a fair amount of it on the computer age. In the days of carbon copies, you either had to type it right, or you got to type it over. You were also expected to know the fundamentals of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Today, if you make a goof -- no problem. Highlight the text, and hit the Delete button. Spelling or grammar question? Run the document through Spell Checker and Grammar Checker. (Lots of luck with those two. . .they're wrong as often as they are right.) I think the computer has encouraged sloppy thinking and a reliance on something other than your own knowledge.
And don't even get me started on chatspeak. I realize that we use informal English here and that the rules are more relaxed. But there's relaxed, and then there's comatose!

Pretty frightening, isn't it? I just keep praying that maybe there are more 6 year olds on here than one would think.
On the other hand, a lot of people in today's culture seem to consider it a badge of honor to be uneducated, so I think they may be faking it.

Technically, your question is not permissable in the prescriptivist view of English either - but it is a multi-national site and that is why there are people for whom English is not their first language and they are doing the best they can. Personally I love to get worldwide views because you can get opinions from people from all sorts of backgrounds and help people too.

Blame it on the schools. Perhaps school teachers are also functionally illiterate in English. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Because they have no where else to go to ask for help? It makes me crazy to see some of the questions that don't even make a complete sentence let alone make any sense! I'm not saying I'm a genius but give me a break!

A lack of proper training in grammar in schools and too much text messaging might be part of the reason.

More parents should home school. The schools these days just do not do the job.
