Many birds do fall out of the sky...many die due to exhaustion and dehydration during migration..others hit buildings, wind turbines, and other man-made objects. Howver, during migration many of them die over the ocean, or fall into the ocean and then drown. The birds that do end up on the ground are usually eaten very quickly by insects, mammals and other birds (corvids). Birds do have collision with airplanes occasionally as well.

Actually... it's funny you mention this. There was town just about an hour north of here that decided to poison its pigeons about 2 months ago. They used the wrong amount of poison, though, and had to declare an emergency for an afternoon because dozens of pigeons were dropping dead out of the sky on top of people. This is a true story, look it up. Schenectady.
The truth is birds do not habitually show any sign of sickness until they are ready to die. The day they die they tend not to fly. it is a flocking thing... any bird that shows weakness in a flock is harassed or killed by other birds, So they tend to die quietly off by themselves... and out of sight.

They don't always fall where they can be seen. Many will die in coountry areas were there is little human population. Those that die in the city do so as a result of hitting windows, since they can't always see tranparent windows and slam into them.

Many birds drop dead, and they do it all the time. Your best bet is to go to the base of a skyscraper; a skyscraper with lots of windows.
Ornithologists say communications towers pose the greatest hazard to migrating birds during periods of poor visibility.
