Don't patent it. The board game industry is too small. Game companies will not bother stealing a game and face a lot of bad press for the small amount of profit they may get from your game. Unless your game is the next Trivial Pursuit (which is highly unlikely...no offense to your idea, it's just very rare that any game gets that popular) it wouldn't be worth it to them. They would rather work on their own ideas than steal from someone they've never heard of. In fact, a patent will actually hurt your chances of being published. The companies are less likely to look at a patented game then they are to look at a non-patented game. They don't want to risk looking at a game that may be similar to something they are already working on if you have a patent on it. Someone who comes to them with a patented game idea is a big red flag that you are new to the field and they will probably pass without even looking at your game. Instead of worrying about a patent, make sure your game is good. Playtest it ALOT, and not just with your friends or family. They won't tell you what they really think. Get some people with no interest in your feelings to test it. When you are sure you have a fun, well-tested game, then bring it to some game companies. First contact a patent lawyer in the US or a patent solicitor in the UK(do an internet search for them), they can give you advice, search for any existing games similar to yours, which may cause patent infringement, and of course submit the patent for your game.

Make a prototype, contact the Patent Office. Then you can either contact a store and sell it direct, or try to contact a toy or game company and see if they will buy it.

Patent it before you approach anyone - if you dont and they steal your idea without paying you a penny you're stuffed. Good luck with the idea and hope it works out for you xx

Make a demo version, get the idea into working condition, playtest it a bunch and then look for a publisher (or publish it yourself).

Let's see...I would start asking around and researching where to go with my new game idea.
