I know, I know. It's a mind-blowing concept. Try to get your collective head together and acknowledge the brilliance.

Okay, first things first. If Steinbrenner created a new National League team, lets call them New York Yankees Redux, he would only be able to control one team at a time due to conflicts of interest. So let's say he hands over control of the Redux to his son-in-law (the guy who will eventually take over the real Yankees in really life, really).

Baseball would have to also create another expansion team to create an equal number of teams. You really need an equal number of teams or else one team has to get 3 days off at a time, and you totally have to #@(K around with the schedules.

So lets say the new team is Las Vegas. Well that's cool. But before long, the casino owners get really interested in the team, and start throwing around money so the new team can sign all the best players. Now, Steinbrenner is furious because he can't overpay for anybody to play, and Steinbrenner's son-in-law is getting pretty angry too.

So they have to resort to drafting intelligently and signing key role players. Amazingly, this strategy pays off for both owners, as they go on to meet each other in the 2010 World Series. Steinbrenner wonders aloud "Good young talent and smart role players! Amazing! Why haven't I thought of this before?" Someone in the room mumbles something about 1996, but Steinbrenner isn't paying any attention.
