Kinda cheap really if you use freeware programs. But if you use top of the line name brand software you could spend thousands easy. But why do that when you could use free software that dose the same.

If you do it yourself it will cost you just the price of a computer WITHOUT operating system.
You have Linux wich is a free operating system and much better than windows. It comes with a great firewall (iptables) and a lot of applications. For the most important data you will be best protected by encrypting that data, you can use PGP for that purpose and it is free too.
If you are going to have a page of your business in the internet, Linux comes with apache, a great web server which can be used with jakarta to serve jsp pages.
All you may need is there for free, but you will have to know how to set it up and make it work, if you don't you will have to pay someone to set all up for you.
If you do it on windows you will have to buy the programs and if you don't know how to set it up you will also have to pay someone to do it.

If you buy the right software to start, it won't cost you anything. Microsoft's Small Business Server 2003 is specifically designed for small business (up to 75 users) and comes with a host of built-in security features. Everything from ISA (internet security and accelleration) and firewalls to NTFS file security. You can even install IPSec and security certificates if you're totally paranoid. Any system can be breached, but for a small business? Set SBS 2003 up correctly, add antivirus and you're done.
