I am a nutritionist

Prenatal vitamins should NOT be taken before you are pregnant

prenatals are LOWER in nutrients then regular multi vitamins you should be taking before you are pregnant (contrary to popular belief regular multivitamins have all the folate you need before your become pregnant and taking prenatals while not pregnant CAN harm you)

Well if you are trying to conceive and the doctor knows it they probably will because the vitamins are good for you too take and will make you strong enough for the pregnancy. If they do not prescribe prenatal vitamins you can get some from the store.

I started my prenatal a year and a half before I even conceived. I think it's a good idea to take them where you're planning to conceive or not. It's the super vitamin! My friend's mom still take prenatal vitamins and she's over 70! I highly recommend them. My immune system was weaker before I started taking my vitamins. You can either have your doctor prescribe them to you or you can get the over-the-counter; they sell them at Target, Wal-Mart and Costco.

Doctors prefer to start you on prenatal vitamins before conception.

What you really need is Folic Acid, you need that BEFORE you conceive. Prenatal vitamins are usually recommended after you are pregnant. You can take them before or just take the regular vitamins.

I bought some OTC ones when we started trying. They are good all around multivitamins though. My doctor prescribed me some when I got pregnant. Now I pay $35 a month after insurance, rather than the $10 I was paying for the OTC ones. More stuff in them I suppose.

My doctor put me on prenatal vitamins when I went in to tell him we were trying to get preg.( I wanted to make sure I was completely healthy before trying ) but my first preg. was a suprise so I didin't get them til after I was preg. If your not trying there is no reason to take them.

If preg is planned then they may start you before. Spina bifida (spine fluid outside of spine, born with it) is prevented ONLY by having enough folic acid in your body. Therefore taking vitamins before becoming pregnant can help prevent that. Once your kid gets it there is no going back/ fixing it.

Start yourself on them before you start trying to conceive. You can buy them over the counter, and once you are pregnant your Dr. will probably give you a prescription for them. The vitamins and minerals will help you to be healthier, and the Folic Acid in them is essential to healthy fetal development.

It's good to start a vitamin before. My OB told me it doesn't have to be a prenatle vitamin. He said any mutivitamin has everything I need. After conception though, you will most likely be prescribed a "prenatle" vitamin.
