I need help my daughter is in the 3rd grade and is having problems with reading and spelling. I was thinking of checking out Hooked on Phonics but not sure if that will be what we need. She is not comprehending what she is reading unless it is read back to her. Any advice will be very helpful! Thanks in advance!!!

To the jerk who put that I needed to change me user name, you need a life, it does not matter what I have as my user name as long as I am trying to be the best parent I can be. At least I give a darn about my kids. There are plenty of people who would let the school take all the blame and would expect them to fix the problem! It is my responsibilty as her mother to make sure she has the best education possible!!!

Hooked on phonics is good for the reading comprehension but not the spelling because you learn to pronounce words as they sound and that's not how they are spelled. Repetitive writing the words will help with spelling lists, make it a game too like have her type the words or even write them and based on the number right have a cookie be a prize or something simple. Has she been tested for any learning disorders or dsylexia? I'm not sure I spelled that one right, but it's where your letters are seen reversed and it makes reading difficult. It might be she is reading it too fast too. I would have her read part of the book or story then ask her questions along the way about what she read just after she reads it.

Why don't you first check out the classic book, "Why Johnny Can't Read," especially the chapter about how not to teach reading. The back of the book has exercises, and once the parent reads the book, sometimes those exercises (along with a patient parent) are all that some children need. The link below will lead you to other links where you can read excerpts from the book
If the exercises are not enough, then at least you will have a good background for evaluating other programs. Hope this helps.

Hooked on Phonics is very good. You could also utilize resources provided online by the National Council of Teachers of English; I'll provide the link.
Thought: Before your daughter learns to read really well, you might want to choose a username other than "eroticmommy69."

So..
There are numerous documented benefits and advantages of teaching children to read early on, and teaching them to reading using phonics and phonemic awareness instructions. It is clear that early language and reading ability development passes great benefits to the child as they progress through school at all grades, and that early language and reading problems can lead to learning problems later on in school.

Best idea is read with her so that she reads it and hears it being read at the same time.
Here's another idea. This one might sounds a bit preschoolish and protracted, but I'm sure it would work. Have her read a sentence, copy it down on a blank sheet of paper, and then make a drawing of the sentence. That way she associates the reading with the writing with the sound with the actions described.
