I was born in Australia to my American mum and Aussie dad. I moved to Philadelphia a few months ago and I intend on living in the U.S. the rest of my life. Do I need to apply for American citizenship or do I already got it because of my mum?

Unless you were born on a US military base in Australia, you are not a citizen and will have to apply to become one.

Your question can't be answered with just the information you provided. I need to know.....

What is your age?

Was your mother a US citizen at the time you were born?

At the time of your birth did your mother file a Report of Birth Abroad with the US embassy, or one of the US consulates, in Australia?

In general, you can probably claim US citizenship through your mother. You need to contact the Department of State in Washington, DC, not Immigration Services.

If your mother did file the Report of Birth Abroad you should have little trouble. If she did not you will be required to provide certified copies of a great many documents to establish her citizenship at the time you were born and to establish the fact that you really are her daughter.

I believe it depends on where you're born. Either way, if you were born in Oz, you're eligible to be a US Citizen by birth right - and vice versa.
